When the chick was returned to the parents, he immediately ran to the water to swim away from his captors.   A whooping crane chick is born with webbed feet.  The webs  disappear as they get older.  Adult whooping cranes cannot swim but are wadding birds.  The parent cranes immediately began to sooth the chick with food and contact calls.
